For its 2023–2024 annual report, the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium entrusted Atelier Design with the creation of a visual language and the layout of its content. Our approach: to make its activities, research and achievements accessible while conveying the institution’s scientific rigour. A report designed to invite readers to discover, understand and explore further.

The visual language was designed to support the RMI’s communication objectives and highlight the breadth of its expertise. A palette of blues, strong contrasts and contemporary typography create a graphic language that is both institutional and expressive.
Sky photography, data and graphic elements ground the report in meteorology and climate science. Together, they bring consistency to the publication while giving each topic room to express its own character.
The layout draws on the visual codes of meteorology: transparency, atmospheric gradients, grids and graphic markers evoke observation tools and the representation of climate phenomena.
White space, bold chapter openings and the alternation between light pages and blue backgrounds create a rhythm throughout the report. Images give readers room to pause, while a structured grid organises the content with precision. A balance between atmosphere and rigour that makes for a fluid reading experience.
To accommodate different reading habits, the report offers several entry points into the content. Headings set the direction, introductions provide context, key figures draw attention and body text explores each subject in depth.
The typographic hierarchy, callout boxes and infographics allow readers to scan the essential information or focus on a particular theme. This structure makes scientific content more accessible and lets everyone explore the report at their own pace.
